170 Years

Tujague’s—New Orleans’ second oldest dining institution, the birthplace of brunch—celebrates its 170th anniversary in 2026. Founded in 1856, Tujague’s has long been a fixture of the French Quarter and a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, earning its reputation as one of the city’s most enduring culinary landmarks.

This milestone marks 170 years of hospitality, tradition, and community. Throughout the year, Tujague’s will recognize the occasion with special moments and offerings as a way to thank the guests and staff who have helped shape the restaurant’s legacy for generations.

According to proprietor Mark Latter, “Reaching 170 years is an incredible achievement and a true testament to the loyalty of our guests and the dedication of our team. Tujague’s has always been rooted in New Orleans history, and we’re proud to continue welcoming diners from near and far into a place that has meant so much to this city for so long.”

The story of Tujague’s is deeply woven into New Orleans’ culinary history. When the restaurant opened adjacent to the city’s first public market in 1856, local workers gathered daily for a mid-day ‘butcher’s breakfast’—a tradition that would later become known worldwide as brunch. From its earliest days, Tujague’s menu has featured signature dishes such as Shrimp Remoulade and Boiled Beef Brisket, later joined by classics like Chicken Bonne Femme. Cocktails have played an equally important role in the restaurant’s history, with the Grasshopper famously created behind Tujague’s original stand-up bar.

As Tujague’s celebrates 170 years, the focus remains on honoring the past while continuing the traditions that have defined the restaurant for more than a century and a half. Guests are encouraged to keep an eye out for anniversary events and special offerings throughout the year by following along on social media and subscribing to our email list.
