Tujague’s—New Orleans’ second oldest dining institution, the birthplace of brunch—celebrates its 170th anniversary in 2026. When the restaurant opened adjacent to the city’s first public market in 1856, local workers gathered daily for a mid-day ‘butcher’s breakfast’—a tradition that would later become known worldwide as brunch. From its earliest days, Tujague’s menu has featured signature dishes such as Shrimp Remoulade and Boiled Beef Brisket, later joined by classics like Chicken Bonne Femme. Cocktails have played an equally important role in the restaurant’s history, with the Grasshopper famously created behind Tujague’s original stand-up bar.
